With a powerful message about the lack of respect for forests and indigenous peoples, the experienced cartoonist Gilmar Machado, known in the world of graphic arts for four decades simply as Gilmar, is the winner of the Grand Prize – Zélio de Ouro Trophy at the 51st Piracicaba International Humor Exhibition. The work also won the Cartoon Award. The announcement was made on the evening of this Saturday, 08/31, on the outdoor stage of the Erotides de Campos Municipal Theater, the Engenho Theater, in Piracicaba (SP), during the opening ceremony of the event. The main exhibition features 453 works, produced by 229 artists from 23 countries.
In the Caricature category, the award went to Cláudia Kfouri, from Ribeirão Preto, who is also the author of the poster for the 22nd Piracicaba Humor Show, which also opened this Saturday, August 31, at Armazém 14 in Engenho Central. The artist paid tribute to singer and composer Milton Nascimento, with references to Minas Gerais and his songs.
The Cartoon category went to Hector Salas, from Bahia, with a critique of the precarious work of app delivery drivers. The Cartoon category went to Luciano Irrthum, from Minas Gerais, with his comic strip criticizing national politics.
The Sculpture category was won by Synnove Hilkner, from Campinas, with a work that portrays the indigenous writer and environmental activist Ailton Krenak.
In the Thematic category – Women, the award went to Luma Rodrigues, from Rio de Janeiro, with a scathing, not at all funny, critique of sexism and abuse of women. In the Health category – Unimed, the award went to Izabela Kowalska, from Poland, with a drawing of a nurse.
The Piracicaba City Council Award was given to Maria Helena Bastos, from Rio de Janeiro, while Rodrigo da Silveira took home the Arcor Award – Children's Rights, with a subtle play on the onomatopoeia Eca and the acronym for ECA (Children and Adolescent Statute).
