International Poster Exhibition Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of Piet Mondrian & Wassily Kandinsky.
The Visual Communication Design Department at İzmir Katip Çelebi University, Faculty of Art and Design, proudly invites artists to participate in an international poster exhibition marking the 80th anniversary of the passing of two pioneering figures of modern art: Piet Mondrian and Wassily Kandinsky. Artists worldwide are encouraged to submit original works that reflect the essence and innovation inspired by Mondrian and Kandinsky. Selected posters will be showcased in a public exhibition at the İKÇÜ Art Gallery on 24-31 December 2024.
Piet Mondrian, renowned for his pioneering contributions to abstraction and his development of the De Stijl movement, redefined the boundaries of art with his commitment to simplicity and harmony through geometry and primary colours. Wassily Kandinsky, often considered the father of abstract art, transformed visual language by believing that colour and form could express profound emotions independent of representational context. Though distinct in their approaches, Piet Mondrian and Wassily Kandinsky shared a profound commitment to abstract expression that transcended the representational confines of their time. Mondrian's exploration of balance and order through the interplay of geometric forms and primary colours resonated with an ideal of universal harmony. In parallel, Kandinsky's vibrant compositions harnessed colour and shape to evoke emotion and spirituality, pushing the boundaries of abstraction to communicate beyond the visible. Both artists believed art could reflect deeper realities, connecting the visual experience to an emotional and philosophical core. While their works differed in execution, they shared a commitment to exploring how form, color, and composition could create a transcendent experience.
Guidelines for Submissions:
We invite artists to contribute works that encapsulate the shared essence of Mondrian and Kandinsky's approach—the synthesis of geometric precision and emotional resonance. The exhibition seeks posters that channel their distinctive yet complementary styles, emphasizing abstraction, bold use of colour, and innovative forms that evoke meaning beyond the literal. This unique exhibition celebrates the timeless legacies of Mondrian and Kandinsky, highlighting the transformative power of abstract art and its impact on modern visual communication. Participating artists can pay homage to these masters and contribute to an international dialogue honouring their artistic philosophies and achievements.
