International Caricature Contest on Camilo Castelo Branco, Portugal

📜 Participation Rules

🇵🇹 Within the scope of the celebrations of the Bicentenary of the Birth of Camilo Castelo Branco, the Municipalities of Ribeira de Pena and Vila Real organize a Caricature Contest of Camilo Castelo Branco, which will take place between April 6 and May 4, 2026.

 

🎯 The objectives of this contest are:

I. To celebrate the birth of Camilo Castelo Branco and his connection to the municipalities of Ribeira de Pena and Vila Real.

II. To bring the figure and work of Camilo into today’s daily life, seeking to stimulate the (re)discovery and reading of his books.

 

📌 Art. 1 .. Participants

This contest is open to national and international artists, amateurs or professionals.

⚖️ Art. 2 .. Conditions of Participation 

I. The caricatures must be unpublished. Participants shall declare on their honor that the works submitted to the contest are unpublished and not created using Artificial Intelligence tools. 

II. Works that are perceived by the jury as not original or created by Artificial Intelligence will be excluded. 

III. Each artist may compete with a maximum of two caricatures. 

IV. Only caricatures accompanied by the declaration of transfer of copyright for the purposes of this contest and the exhibitions, dissemination and merchandising associated with it, in the present and in the future, will be considered for evaluation. 

VI. The Municipalities responsible for this contest may proceed with the dissemination, present or future, by digital or printed means, of the submitted caricatures, always crediting the authors. 

 

🖼️ Art. 3 .. Requirements 

I. The caricatures may be submitted in physical or digital format. 

II. The works must be presented in A4 format, with 300 dpi resolution. 

III. Any drawing or painting techniques may be used, manual or digital. 

IV. In case the caricatures include any word or text, the wording must be in the Portuguese language. 

 

📨 Art. 4 .. Applications 

I. The submission of works for the contest must be made until May 4, 2026. 

II. Applications must be sent to the following address: A/C Ricardo Carvalho to Municipality of Ribeira de Pena, Praça do Município, 4870-152 Ribeira de Pena. 

II. Elements to accompany the application:
a) Caricature in physical format or file on a pen drive; 

b) Title of the caricature (if applicable);
c) Pseudonym of the author; 

d) Sealed envelope with the author’s data: Artistic name, full name, full address, telephone/mobile number, declaration of transfer of copyright for the purposes associated with this contest. 

 

🏛️ Art. 5 .. Jury
I. The jury will be composed of the technicians Ricardo Machado Carvalho (Municipality of Ribeira de Pena) and Rui Araújo (Municipality of Vila Real) and the visual artist Paulo Araújo. 

II. The decisions of the jury are final and not subject to appeal. 

III. The jury reserves the right not to select a winner, if the works submitted to the contest do not show sufficient quality. 

 

⭐ Art. 6 .. Evaluation and Selection Criteria
Caricatures are humorous portraits in which there are exaggerated, distorted and comic characteristics. The submitted works will be evaluated according to the following criteria: 

a) Creativity; 

b) Originality; 

c) Line work; 

d) Communicative capacity of the writer’s personality; 

e) Visual impact.

🏆 Art. 7 .. Prizes

I. Prizes will be awarded to the works classified in first and second places, unless the jury decides that no work meets the minimum quality requirements.

II. The first place winner will receive €2,500 (VAT included).

III. The second place winner will receive €1,000 (VAT included).

IV. The award ceremony will take place on the date of the inauguration of the exhibition resulting from the contest or on a date to be announced. 

 

📧 Art. 8 .. Notification of Participants

I. The awarded participants will be notified by e-mail of the jury’s decision by May 11.

II. The public announcement of the winners will take place on May 14. 

 

🖼️ Art. 9 .. Exhibitions and Catalog

The organizing Municipalities will promote an exhibition with the competing works (if the quantity and quality of the works justify it), which will be displayed in successive periods in each of the municipal headquarters, on dates to be announced.

Accompanying the exhibition, a catalogue with all the exhibited works will be distributed. The represented artists will receive a copy of the catalog.

©️ Art. 10 .. Copyright 

I. The authors of the caricatures will assign the respective copyright to the organizing Municipalities for the use of the works in the exhibitions associated with the contest, for the present and future promotion of the contest and the exhibitions and for possible associated merchandising. 

II. The selected works will explicitly include the signature or any other form of identification of the author. 

III. In the printing of the works for exhibition, the alogue and other purposes, the work may be subject to changes in tone, color or dimensions, for technical reasons, while preserving the graphic conception of the competing works.

 

📌 Art. 11 .. Final Provisions 

I. Participation in this contest implies full acceptance of the terms of these Participation Rules. 

II. The caricatures submitted to the contest may not be disclosed or publicly exhibited by the authors before the announcement of the results. 

 

📚 Art. 12 .. Omitted Cases

All omitted cases or situations not provided for in this document will be resolved by the Jury of the Contest.
